A message from Chairman Whitbeck:

Democrats are already promising to block or slow down his confirmation as much as possible.

Supreme Court appointments were a key factor in the 2016 campaign, and the people chose Donald Trump to fill the vacancy left by the untimely death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Now it's time for the Senate to get to work and confirm Judge Gorsuch.

Judge Gorsuch is a supremely qualified judge, having served on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. As President Trump noted, he's a judge very much in the model of Justice Scalia.

We have to get Judge Gorsuch confirmed. I need you to do three things right now:

1) Sign our petition to Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, to tell them that we won't tolerate any foot dragging or obstruction on their part. It's time for them to get busy and confirm Judge Gorsuch.

2) Call Mark Warner at (202) 224-2023, and Tim Kaine at (202) 224-4024, and tell them that the American people have spoken. They wanted Donald Trump to fill the vacant seat, and now it's time for them to stop their obstruction.

3) Forward this email to your friends. We need every single voice we can get on this one. Democrats made it plain earlier this week that they're going to filibuster Judge Gorsuch, even before he was announced.  We can't let that stand.

Former Vice President Joe Biden said it when he was in the Senate -- the new President should fill Supreme Court vacancies following an election year. President Trump has made his choice, and it's time for the Senate to act.

We can't allow Democrats to normalize this kind of obstruction. Join our effort to confirm Judge Gorsuch today!

John Whitbeck, Chairman
Republican Party of Virginia
Subject: Honoring Justice Antonin Scalia and the Implications of his Passing

Dear George Mason Republican Women and Republican family.

I know that we are all deeply saddened by the passing of Supreme Court Associate Justice, Antonin Scalia.  The longest serving justice on the Roberts court, Justice Scalia was an unwavering, faithful conservative warrior. He consistently interpreted the Constitution in the spirit of the original intent of the framers and was a staunch strict constructionist and textualist. Please join me in keeping his family and loved ones in prayer.

With the passing of Justice William Rhenquist in 2005 and retirement of David Souter in 2009, The Obama Administration has successfully seen two nominees confirmed to the Supreme Court - Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elana Kagan. The outcome of the Obama appointees has been a delicate balance on the court: four liberal- leaning justices and four conservative. The liberal justices are Ginsberg, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan. The four conservative were Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito.   This leaves the ninth justice, the justice that is known for swing voting, Justice Anthony Kennedy. Kennedy's recent voting record has been trending away from that of the court's more conservative justices, however. See the first graph attached below. Similarly, reflecting the deepening schism American political culture, the Rehnquist and Roberts courts have seen increases 5-4 decision trends and the trend appears to be increasing. See the second graph below.

It is because of these trends that Justice Scalia's passing is so chilling.  If Senate Republicans are able to delay the appointment of new Supreme Court justice and if a Republican is elected to the White House in November, the Republicans would have to maintain a majority in the Senate to have the votes to confirm a new justice in Spring 2017. The problem is, is that if a Republican were able to fill Scalia's seat, it would only preserve a precarious balance, and it is a precarious at best.  We would not really gain any ground.  We would just be "maintaining".

Now, let's take this a step further. If Senate Republicans are indeed able to forestall a third Obama appointment, what would the cost be in a critical election season? At the moment, Republicans are enjoying wide-spread angst over the Obama Administration's failed policies and empty promises, an overtly socialist candidate, and a candidate that is under  investigation for the callous disregard for the United State's most sensitive intelligence. In this, up until today, we were in a strong position to elect a Republican in the fall. Now, we see two branches of government, dominated by different parties, promising to use the power that the Constitution affords them to move forward with or delay the selection of a new Associate Justice. Knowing how the liberal media has handled Democrat/Republican show-downs in the past, Senate Republicans are likely to come out of this imminent battle with a PR black eye and having made a withdrawal on some of the recently gained public good will.  The question is, how big will this withdrawal be and will it be enough to tip the scales back in the direction of the Democrats?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

With a saddened but resolute heart,

The title of her talk is: “America’s Noble Heritage” and she plans to show how, in Mary Bell’s words, the Founders “incorporated many of the tenants of the Hebrew/Christian religions into our Founding Documents.”

George Mason Republican Women received two awards at the VFRW CONVENTION on April 24 for their work in 2015. One award was for the enormous volunteer hours we put in and the other was a Blue Ribbon Award for a high level of achievement in maintaining the goals of the VFRW.
2015 President Geraldine Davie humbly accepted the awards for all the members of our club.
